JUNETEENTH – Celebrate Freedom
We honor and celebrate Juneteenth. On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing more than three million enslaved people in the Confederate states. However, many enslaved people continued to be held captive after the proclamation announcement. Two and half years later on June 19, 1865, federal orders were read in Galveston, Texas, proclaiming all enslaved people in Texas were now free.
